Haleiwa Going Plastic Free

By Brianne Randle

Haleiwa is known for it's surf, shops, and small town feel. But it may soon be on the map for what it lacks....Plastic.

"We're not just addressing plastic bags, we're addressing all single use plastic items and that includes take out containers, styrofoam," says Kim Johnson, Kokua Hawaii Foundation Executive Director.

The Kokua Hawaii Foundation is looking to turn Haleiwa Plastic Free. An idea city councils on both Maui and Oahu have proposed. But, many North Shore business owners say they won't wait. Taking action into their own hands.

"As small businesses we can make those decisions without having to go through a lot of policy and it's something we can implement right away," Lee Brooke Roy, The Growing Keiki Owner.

"But the real way to show that you're in support is to start doing it now, so basically we're not waiting," says Johnson.

Switching out plastic for these... reusable bags.

"I think haleiwa has a real advantage because several of the businesses are locally owned so people they are in the shops they can make that decision they can make those changes," says Johnson.

Not just for clothes....for food too.

"If someone comes in and orders one meal and I hand it to them in a Bio Bag with the container, knife, spoon, fork and a cup, lid and straw it is about 35-cents at the most," says Kelly Tsutsui, Food For Thought Hawaii Co-Owner.

A bit extra than regular take out. But, at a cost some say is worth it.

"It's a principal and I think that's just the bottom line it shouldn't be over pennies or dollars," says Neill Tsutsui, Food For Thought Hawaii Co-Owner.

"Its not that hard to do if we just make small changes it can really impact our island," says Roy.

"And its important to show that local business can make a difference," says Johnson.

Over thirty-five businesses in Haleiwa have signed on to become plastic free. The Kokua Hawaii Foundation hopes this movement will encourage other towns to do the same.
