Popular tourist stop will be closed for months

By Jai Cunningham

A popular east Oahu tourist attraction will be closed for at least three months, and the shutdown could happen as early as April.

It's all part of a major renovation project that will ultimately enhance the Halona Blowhole.

It's a million dollar view, from a less than million dollar platform.

"Well it's outstanding. I could sit here for an hour or two and just meditate over it," said Bob Parzatka, visiting Hawaii from Chicago.

But change is in the air at this tourist attraction. Cracking walls will soon be brought down, replaced with fencing that will give expanded views.

"I think it is actually really, really important. I mean this is the side a lot of people don't see. You know the blowhole, the natural part. Most of the time they stay in Waikiki and they see the tall buildings. They don't see the beauty that we see in our backyard," said Kanilehua Edwards.

Edwards knows better than most, she's in the tourism industry.

"I love it here. I can come out here on my days off out here. But I love bringing tourists out here, they love it. This is like Hawaii. You get to show the coast and the water, and that's what they're here for," Edwards said.

But in a few months the show will stop.
The closure will be for at least three months, maybe four.
And Edwards knows how painful that will be.

"It's going to be real rough," she said. "The trolley, there are three of us that run out here every single day. And we do three runs each and this is one of our stops. And one of them that the tourists actually look forward to because we tell them about the blowhole," she added.

Other changes will include ramps to make the spot handicap accessible.

"Well nature erodes, and if people want to use it they want to make it safe and accessible I'm sure," said Parzatka.

"Especially if they are going to be A.D.A. Accessible, and keep people off from going down to the blowhole it will be really good," said Edwards.

A lower terrace that is crumbling will be removed.

Construction alone will run more than $800,000.

Add in design and you've got a one million dollar project.
