Memorial for Cyrus Continues to Grow

By Brianne Randle

Cyrus Belt's death has touched many across our state. The pedestrian bridge where he was killed has become a place for many to grieve and make sense of what happened.

"It was really, just bad, words can't really explain what had happened."

"it touched hawaii, everybody was affected by it."

"I couldn't believe it you know."

One after another those who never even knew Cyrus came to show they care.

"They have left flowers, leis, balloons, stuffed animals, pictures I even saw some people they wrote prayers for him."

Even drivers-by took their time to show respect.

And for those down below, the decorated bridge was hard to miss and even harder to forget.

"It's hard every time I pass by the bridge I get goose-bumps and I start crying and it's sad, really sad."

But such an overwhelming response became too much. Traffic, got backed up for miles. And some items left on the bridge were reported to be falling through the cracks onto the freeway below.

So, the state stepped in to help.

"Yeah some flowers and debris, so we got the call to come over and remove the debris, just put it on the side on the walkway," said Rick Mailai, State Transportation Department.

Placing the memorial out of site from the freeway below. But, not out of mind.

"It's fine I mean there's a memorial and it shows respect for Cyrus."

"As long as he knows it's still here for him."

The Transportation Department encourages anyone who wants to add to the memorial to do so. As long as items are kept to the side.
