Kilauea: 25 Years and Counting

By Kirk Matthews

Twenty-five years ago, Kilauea volcano began its current eruption.

Since then, homes have been lost and lives have been changed.

And so far, the volcano shows no signs of stopping.

Every minute, another 50,000 gallons of molten lava surge from cracks on the volcano's flank.

Scientists say every day, there is enough lava coming from the volcano to fill Diamond Head Crater to a depth of one foot.

In the 25 years since Kilauea began its current eruption, 212 acres of new coastline have been added to Volcanoes National Park.

But that growth has come at a cost.

In 1990, homes in Kalapana were destroyed by the fiery lava which eventually over-ran the famed black sand beach.

The molten river also torched expansive tracts of native woodland and rainforest.

When Kona winds blow, vog from the volcano makes its way up the island chain.

Seismometers record almost constant tremors from land around the volcano - some are minor quakes, others are methane explosions.

The volcano has become one of the premiere tourist attractions in Hawaii.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors have come to stand on the edge of the crater, to smell the acrid sulfur fumes and watch the fiery scene that is at once brand new and old as creation.

It has been called by some, the drive-by volcano where visitors can learn about its history and the legend of Pele just a few feet from the visitor center.

There really is no other force in nature that is both destructive and creative.

Because of its 2000 degree river, the lava intrigues and frightens us.

Kilauea is a lab for scientists, a stewardship for park rangers, an attraction for tourists and sacred ground for native Hawaiians.
