Virtual patients train future doctors

By Jai Cunningham

A building collapse, a hurricane, or an explosion leaves dozens injured to different degrees. That was the case today in for a disaster-response simulation unlike others you may have seen.

"I can't breath. I can't breathe."

Like any good doctor, Alan Kuramoto assesses his patient's condition.

“He suffered a wound to his right chest wall that penetrated and caused air, and or blood to seep inside and compress his right lung," said Kuramoto.

But Kuramoto isn't a Doctor, although he hopes to become one someday. He's training at the U.H. John A. Burns School of Medicine. And you might say the patient he's training on is bionic.

"They are completely programmable using computer interfaces. So that there is very little that has to happen on the part of an operator during an educational event," said Simulation Director Dr. Benjamin Berg, from the U.H. Medical School.

Like airplane simulators for doctors. Anything from a disaster scenario...

"He's just suffering from a severe injury to his left leg, and lost a lot of blood. So, I'm going to apply a tunicate to this child," said Kuramoto.

To much more...

"Maybe cardiac conditions, rare genetic diseases and stuff like that that we can make representations of with these new teaching tools that we've had," said Berg.

The school has had the Manikins for more than a year. And as you might imagine they're not cheap...About $700,000 to equip the facility, and a half million a year to run it.

But some would say it's difficult to put a price on the training of tomorrow's doctors.

Dozens of U.H. Medical School students have trained on the manikins, as well as doctors, nurses, and paramedics from as far away as the Philippines and Japan.
