Waikiki hosts International Women's Conference

By Kathy Muneno

Governor Linda Lingle hosted the International Women's Leadership Conference in Waikiki. The privately-funded event has grown through its four years, and the women who attend come to inspire and be inspired.

"Take your passion, make it happen," said one speaker.

900 women sang, laughed and were urged to take action

"It can be jotting down potential titles for your novel, it can be as large as you want but make that commitment, go," said Consultant and Author Barbara Stoker, from Intelligentrisking, INC.

Some STILL laughed, but Barbara Stoker was serious...the former executive of Disney, Hallmark, Mattel and Coors is also an author, mother of three and ice climber...

"I recently started my own business partly because of coming to this conference three years ago," said Stoker.

"It seems like I'm risking a lot more than just myself and how do you get over that fear," asked one attendee.

"It's one thing to go solo and that's very risky cause there's no climbing partner there's no one there to catch you when you fall but if it's a team it has to have some team decision making," answered Stoker.

"I am Dr. Martha Tilaar from Indonesia."

Leaders from far and near, students, private and government workers, they have seen progress.

"Certainly right now I believe we have the most women chairs, department chair level of any medical school in the united states so clearly over the 15 years I've been here women have begun to play a much more significant leadership role at the medical school," said Dr Lynnae Sauvage, the interim chair at Jabsom OB-GYN & Women’s Health.

"I've gone to an all girl school all my life so I've always been exposed to oh you can do whatever you want because you're a girl it doesn't make a difference," said St. Andrew’s Priory Junior Alyssa Shimoda.

And this conference, flash dance and all, helps them see hope...

"It shows me that there are a lot of opportunities for me to excel and to achieve a lot just like all the other women in there and to hear their stories," said Shimoda.

"You'll be dancing through your life," sang another speaker.
