HONOLULU (KHON2) - It's been a very busy weekend for volunteers from the American Red Cross. From flooding in Aina Haina and Waimanalo to unprecedented record rainfall totals on Kauai.
This morning on WakeUp2day, American Red Cross Hawaii Chapter CEO Coralie Matayoshi joined us in studio to give us an update on response efforts.
Matayoshi says 40 people were stranded without food or water at Hanalei Elementary School shelter yesterday and that number ballooned to over 60 overnight.
The Kauai Fire Department had been working with the Coast Guard to air lift them by helicopter to a shelter at Church of the Pacific, but severe weather prevented that from happening.
Matayoshi says the County was able to get food and water from Hanalei Big Save to the Hanalei shelter by using an ambulance to get through to deliver it.
