Two killed in plane crash on Molokai

Two people died in a plane crash on Molokai Sunday.

It happened four miles west of Molokai Airport.

A Textron Aviation (formerly Cessna) U206G airplane with the tail number N732DF left Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at around 10:30 a.m.

Investigators determined the couple was flying from Oahu to Molokai.

The Maui Fire Department was notified at 11:15 a.m. by the air traffic control tower after it lost communication with the private aircraft.

In a preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board, as the plane approached Molokai Airport, the pilot told the air traffic controller he "was maneuvering to remain clear of clouds. The airplane then disappeared from the radar display system and the air control controller transmitted to the pilot with no response."

Crews located the crash site in a remote area of Molokai Ranch in Maunaloa Valley at 12:12 p.m. There were no survivors.

All-terrain vehicles were required to access the area as recent rains made the roads too muddy for larger fire trucks to pass.

Officials say the aircraft appears to have burned on impact. Firefighters extinguished areas that were still smoldering.

Conditions included low clouds and fog that reached ground level. It was not raining at the time.

Maui police secured the scene until investigators with Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board arrived.

Kamehameha Schools identified the victims as Lynn Vogt, who had been with the school for more than three decades, and her husband, Bill.

"She contributed to the success and well-being of our students and community as a researcher and English teacher, and as an advisor and mentor to both keiki and colleagues. Her deep commitment to our haumana was evident in all she did," Taran Chun, head of school for the Kapalama campus, wrote in a social media post.
