The murder trial for a federal agent accused of fatally shooting a Kailua man two years ago in Waikiki is underway.
Christopher Deedy is charged with second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Kollin Elderts in 2011.
At the time, Deedy was in Honolulu on state department business for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference.
In August 2012, a judge denied a motion to move the trial to federal court. Deedy's lawyer is appealing, saying his client is a federal employee and is entitled to present his defense in federal court.
Opening statements began at 9 a.m. Monday in Circuit Court.
UPDATE: The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the nearshore waters of Makena State Park on Wednesday due to a report of a large shark exhibiting aggressive behavior, which chased two spear fishermen out of the water.
An 83-year-old man is fighting for his life after he was found with severe head injuries early Wednesday morning in Chinatown.
The Honolulu Marathon is quickly approaching. With just four days to go, close to 30,000 people have registered and that means big bucks for the state.
