Scuba spearfishing in the waters off West Hawaii could soon be banned.
That's after the state Board of Land and Natural Resources approved the ban Friday after hours of testimony.
The board also approved a new rule limiting aquarium fish collection in West Hawaii waters to 40 species.
"I was disappointed with the outcome because I believe we need more scientific data before taking a step that will affect fishers' lives," state Department of Land and Natural Resources head William Aila said in a statement.
The rules will now go to the attorney general's office for final review then to the governor's desk for his signature.
