Think Honolulu is a safe place to drive? One report puts the city near the bottom of the list.
According to a report by Allstate Insurance, a driver in Honolulu gets into an accident every eight years, making the city one of the lease safest in the country.
KHON2 didn't have to go very far to see some bad drivers in Honolulu. One driver went into a lane without using a turn signal. Another driver ran a red light. A third driver crossed numerous lanes without notice.
"It's so busy that obviously going to have a lot of accidents," driver David Kaahanui said.
"I just had bad luck with the cones. When I first got here, I didn't know what the cones meant, so I made a left-hand turn and hit a car," driver Eric Rogers said.
It's those collisions, that Allstate Insurance uses for its Best Drivers Report.
Every year, it ranks the 200 largest cities in the country. This year, Honolulu landed at No. 128.
The report says the average Honolulu driver gets into an accident every 8.7 years, which is 15 percent higher than the national average. Fort Collins, Colo. was named the safest and Washington D.C. came in at the very bottom.
"But we have a lot of tourists, a lot of visitors, people in the military. Maybe they don't know some of the local customs," said Rep. Tom Brower (D) Waikiki, Ala Moana.
The Ala Moana area is known for having a lot of accidents. Rep. Brower says he sees a lot of bad drivers on the road.
"And there are a lot of senior drivers. When I'm driving, sometimes they will be going slower when other cars around them will be going fast," Rep. Brower said.
So how can Honolulu's roads become safer? Experts say drivers need to cut down on distractions, obey all traffic laws, and use the car's safety features including turn signals.
Basically, drivers need to change bad habits. Some believe that can happen after years of experience behind the wheel.
"I'm actually safer now because I've slowed way down," Rogers said.
Honolulu continues to fall in this Best Drivers Report, dropping 15 spots from last year.
