A 60-year-old man is behind bars after he allegedly broke into a Kihei apartment and sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl.
Maui police say on July 10, the victim's mother was awakened by the sound of her 8-year-old daughter crying, who told her there was a man in the room. The victim's mother saw a man standing over her daughter with a flashlight in his mouth. The mother then yelled and chased the man from the room.
The suspect ran down the stairs and into the parking lot as the victim's mothers called police and provided a description of the man.
A responding officer arrived to the scene at about 12:15 a.m. and saw a man, who fit the description, walking at a fast pace within the apartment complex.
The officer then stopped the man, who was found to be in possession with a flashlight.
The suspect was identified as Zdenek Behuncik of Kihei.
Behuncik was arrested and charged with first-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary.
His bail is set at $150,000.
The first runner to cross the finish line of the 2013 Honolulu Marathon was Gilbert Chepkwony who finished in 2:18:47.
Thousands gathered at the memorial to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to those who survived.
You may remember the story we did earlier this week about the Pearl Harbor survivor who was headed here from the mainland for the ceremony, he was bumped from the flight and didn't know if he would get here in time.
