Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company is testing out unmanned aerial vehicles above their Maui sugar cane fields in their own effort to conserve water.
HC&S got permission from the FAA to operate the UAV.
It will carry special cameras to see which areas of their fields are getting the right amount of water.
"Being able to have high resolution pictures of your entire field you can detect changes in growth patterns or other things that can help you manage your farm better. It is another tool in the farmers tool box to help them do their job better," Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company agronomist Mae Nakahata said.
HC&S says their UAV will not operate near residential areas or public places.
