Police say a man died at Waimea Valley while trying to help another swimmer.
Emergency crews were called to the area near Waimea Falls just after 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Police say initially a woman was in distress and the man went in to help her. He never resurfaced.
Rescue crews searched the water and found the man's body about an hour later, underwater.
The man died in an apparent drowning according to Emergency Medical Services officials.
He was 31-years-old and was visiting from California.
"The visitor is from San Diego and we reached out and we're helping the family. He was traveling here to be with his family on a vacation and a very tragic incident what happened at Waimea," said Jessica Lani Rich, Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii.
Police say the woman whom the man tried to help is okay and have classified the case as an unattended death.

Thousands gathered at the memorial to pay tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to those who survived.
You may remember the story we did earlier this week about the Pearl Harbor survivor who was headed here from the mainland for the ceremony, he was bumped from the flight and didn't know if he would get here in time.
