A 17-year-old cold case has come to a close.
A Circuit Court judge imposed a mandatory life sentence for 40-year-old Jason Lee McCormick.
He strangled Robert Henderson, a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii.
Henderson's body was found in his Ilikai apartment in July 1996.
McCormick, who has a history of mental illness, confessed to the slaying in 2008 while under psychiatric care.
"The torment in his mind that what he had done as he phased in and out of psychiatric treatment and medication and the voices, wanting to free himself of what he did to this man," defense attorney Michael Green said.
McCormick's lawyer also said that his client had tried to confess to the murder before, but no one believed him.
