A man is hospitalized after being attacked and robbed during a morning hike at Waahila Ridge State Park.
Honolulu Police were called to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. Friday.
The 28-year-old man was about a half-mile from the parking lot when he was attacked by a man with an unknown weapon.
The suspect is still on the loose.
Other park visitors were shocked to hear about the incident.
"Oh that's such a shame. For Pete's sake, this is relaxed, laid back. We don't need anybody robbing somebody," Waikiki resident Lavonne West said.
"It's one of those terrible things that you hear about paradise. There is crime and robberies and all that that a lot of the tourists don't hear about," Ohio visitor Allan Stern said.
The victim is in stable condition.
Police have not released details on the suspect.
Sources tell KHON2 that state Department of Health Director Loretta Fuddy died in a plane crash off Molokai.
