The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay raised nearly $200,000 to repair the historic canopy and pier.
A dedication ceremony was held Thursday afternoon at the historic site.
Over the years, the pier and canopy have been visited by thousands from around the world, many of them celebrating weddings or anniversaries. It had fallen into disrepair, until now.
"Really all we had to do was get together with the Rotary. They did an absolutely fabulous job. We were able to put a few bucks together and get the permission of the DLNR to smooth the way for all the permits," Gov. Neil Abercrombie said.
Gov. Abercrombie and Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvahlo were on hand for the ceremony.
"We'd like to thank the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay. The restoration of this landmark, I say landmark for Hanalei. My great grandfather was born in that valley right there and it brings back all the family connections personally," Mayor Carvahlo said.
The pier and canopy, which served as a shipping port until some 80 years ago, was featured in the 1955 movie "South Pacific." In 1979, it was declared a National Historic Landmark, but in recent years, the site had fallen into disrepair.
The Rotary Club of Hanalei worked with the Department of Land and Natural Resources on reconstruction plans and raised the funds to return the pier and canopy to their former glory.
The gates to the pier were officially opened and the pier and canopy are expected to be a tourist attraction for Kauai's north shore once again.
