A family dog is dead and the owner has been arrested. It's a case of animal cruelty that has neighbors in disbelief.
Andrea Fiegle, 36, was arrested Sunday night at her home in Haleiwa. She was the one who called 911 to report the death of her dog.
Honolulu Police were called to a house on Paalaa Road at around 6 p.m. Sunday.
Police say Fiegle was upset with her dog for misbehaving, so she disciplined the dog with a dangerous instrument and it died.
Police called the Hawaiian Humane Society.
"We got there, the dog was already dead. There was nothing we can do for the animal. Apparently the owner was disciplining the dog and it ended in the dog's death," Hawaiian Humane Society Community Relations Director Jacque LeBlanc said.
Leblanc would not comment on what dangerous instrument was used and how the dog died, but she says their chief veterinarian has performed a necropsy. The results will determine the cause of death and the type of injuries.
"It's looking like this is probably one of the worst cases in intentional death that we've seen. So I don't think that this is an accident," LeBlanc said.
Neighbors and friends are shocked.
"Freaks me out 'cause she's never even tried to obedience train the dog. She's always been very caring it seems to me," neighbor John Baum said.
Another friend says Fiegle loves animals and she even takes care of his two dogs when he's out of town.
He says Fiegle bought the dog, a Pointer-Rhodesian Ridgeback mix for her nine-year-old daughter just a few months ago.
Neighbors says they haven't heard any problems with the dog or the owner.
"No crying. I never did hear the dogs cry, so if there was torture I figure I would hear a cry 'cause we have a dog ourselves and they would know," neighbor Ken Ige said.
Fiegle has not yet been charged.
