It's been a favorite hangout spot at Ala Moana Center for nearly 30 years. But on Thursday, some long-time customers got the sad news. Zippy's is closing at the end of the month.
"At least four days for lunch every week," customer Geri Motonaga said.
Customers like her have been ordering their favorite Zippy's signature items at the Ala Moana location for close to three decades.
"She comes almost every, five times a week," customer Cindy Han said.
The group in the back corner call themselves, "The Zippy's talk story ohana," customer Keoki Aio said.
They're devoted diners who eat, drink, and be merry at Ala Moana Zippy's.
"I started coming here and the next thing you know, I started seeing my friends walking through here with a ukulele and a guitar. Next thing you know, they stopped here and we all started playing music here," Aio said.
But at the end of the month the music will stop because this Zippy's is closing -- a little earlier than expected.
General Growth Properties announced a $543 million plan to renovate Ala Moana Center's Ewa wing and Sears is set to close June 2.
"We rely on our regular customers. That's why we always try to take care of everybody like that," Zippy's manager Franchot Uehara, Jr. said.
The restaurant employs 28 workers, all of whom restaurant management is trying to relocate at the other two dozen Zippy's locations.
Meanwhile, this ohana will also have to find a new place to call home.
"Not too good. So now we gotta go look for another place to kind of have something like this, where Zippy's everyone they like us here," Aio said.
It may take you a little longer to get around this weekend. There will be lane and road closures all over Oahu because of parades and the Honolulu Marathon.
The city has received more reports of stray bullets from the Koko Head rifle range. So the city is closing the range while it figures out how to make it safer.
