With the swipe of a pen, a new contract for Hawaii public school teachers was finalized on Thursday.
One of the major hiccups in the two-year battle was controversial teacher evaluations.
Across the nation, including Hawaii, the progress of teachers is measured by student test scores.
Under the new contract, evaluation standards will be set by an advisory board, which will include teachers.
"So, it's based on a multiple measure of evaluation. It's not based solely on a test score and that is a very big question throughout the country -- tying test scores as a main evaluation piece," Hawaii State Teachers Association president Wil Okabe said.
"This contract will be a model across the nation and I'm absolutely confident that the president and Secretary Duncan will be very pleased with the outcome," Gov. Neil Abercrombie said.
The selection process for the advisory board has not yet been set.
