The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a statement that there was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake off east coast of South Island New Zealand.
A Pacific wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

- Coordinates - 42.0 south 174.9 east
- Location - Off east coast of the South Island N.Z.
- Magnitude - 6.9 moment
Based on all available data a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
This will be the only statement issued for this event unless additional data are received.
