With just four days until the special session on marriage equality, University of Hawaii Manoa students are making a push.
More than 400 students have signed up for a petition in favor of same-sex marriage.
They said they were inspired to take action after their student government debated the pros and cons of a marriage equality measure that the state legislature will take up next week.
"Many have asked how our next generation will receive marriage equality, but it's really our next generation that's leading the way, who are overwhelmingly supportive of ending hurtful discrimination and treating everyone with the same respect and aloha that each of us deserves," said Rep. Chris Lee (D) Kailua.
"It's simple. Gay people, just like all the other people in the world, have the right -- have the human right -- to get married. And they should be able to get legally married in Hawaii just like they should be able to get legally married everywhere," UH freshman Lisa Grandinetti said.
Starting Monday, lawmakers will consider a bill making marriage between same-sex couples legal.
If passed, same-sex marriage could take place beginning Nov. 18.
