Helping Seniors deal with stressful times

By Kirk Matthews

We all face stressful times but they can be especially upsetting for senior citizens.

We like to think of our seniors - happy and engaged in the world around them. But that may not always be the case.

"One that we worry about a lot is depression which really is not a normal thing for our elders to face. However, many do face it as they move into older adulthood," said Brooke Evans,

There can be various reasons for that depression.

"Loss of individuals in their life whether it be significant others, spouses - activities that they used to be able to do because of certain changes in their body or medical kinds of conditions put them more at risk," said Evans.

Brooke Evans works with Access Line's Crisis Services. She says everyone, even seniors, gets depressed some time.

"If those symptoms are more severe, so it's something where an individual is talking about not wanting to be alive any more or what we call suicidal threats, things along those lines, or really severe disturbances where they weren't like that before, there are certain resources that an individual can contact on behalf of someone," said Evans.

One of those resources is the Access Line.

"So you can call the access line. You can talk with the counselors there as well as request emergency services and someone will come to your house, your community center, the hospital, where ever you're at to work with you," said Evans.

When she says someone - she means herself.

"I work with a team called Crisis Mobile Outreach. They are a team of folks that go out into the community in crisis situations to help to work to resolve that crisis. So these are mental health emergencies. Often times the individual might be severely depressed, suicidal or so disoriented that we're worried about their safety, really. We're worried about them being able to make it 24 hours a day," said Evans.
