There is a log cabin in Kalihi, just off the Likelike Highway that has become extremely popular these days. The quiet Gulick Avenue neighborhood rocks every weekday morning promptly at ten a.m.

This ain't no disco - as they say in the song. These boogie shoes are worn by Kalihi Valley seniors who come here each week day morning for their exercise. The Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services provides this exercise program as a part of their health maintenance work. Kokua Kalihi started out doing this just a couple days a week.

"Because they know exactly that exercise will make them healthy. And then, so, we just have a lot of people come to enroll and then we have to do that every day now from Monday to Friday," Cynthia Sturdevant said.

Research proves exercise helps with longevity and the quality of life. But there's an added benefit for the seniors.

"It's not only to provide people with exercise," explained Sturdevant."But to also help them to engage with other seniors so it's like a social support for them."

Kokua Kalihi provides transportation for the seniors who otherwise wouldn't be here. But this activity is more than an hour of chair dancing.

"Once they have this social network, we also intervene with other health education to prevent them from frail - how to maintain their own health and then how to prevent from other illnesses."

Kokua Kalihi counts on important partners.

"We work with the University of Hawaii Geriatric Medicine Fellows. They also come and and then they do the physical examinations. If they found out they have a health problem, they can do the consultation with the doctors."

But for now - this is the time we dance.
