Keeping healthy with the Kalani Health Academy

By Kirk Matthews

Little children look up to bigger ones and that was certainly evident this morning at Kalani High School. The Seniors in the Health Academy put on a health fair.

The Kalani High School gym was filled with third graders learning about health. There were lots of hands on, feet on activities for them under the helpful supervision of Seniors in the Kalani Health Academy.

"We have fitness and we have straub doing an obstacle course and we have our health service corps class, they're doing jump rope. And we have peer education, they're teaching about not bullying and everything and we have germs - how to wash their hands," said Nicole Sakamoto, one of the academy's advisors.

In fact, that was one of the more fun activities. The students washed their hands, then looked at them under a black light to see if they got all the bacteria off. The health academy welcomes juniors interested in health and related fields.

"And then the next year you take health occupations which is what we're doing. And we're the class who basically set this up and everything and so if you're interested in the health academy, it's a good opportunity," said another advisory, Kari Odo.

You could tell by the smiles on their faces the youngsters were thoroughly enjoying the company of the teens in the health academy.

"I guess you could say they do look up to us. It's a good thing though. It puts us in our place and makes us show them a good way of living life," said Kayla Kimura, a Kalani Health Academy advisor.

Kayla will pursue a career in the health field at colorado state studying forensics. Meanwhile, she's enjoying her time with the third graders.

"If I was in third grade, yes. I would love to come do this kind of stuff because it's a good experience. It gets them active, it gets them learning about new health things and it makes them more aware," said Kimura.
