Rising Vog Levels

By Tammy Mori

Rising vog levels have officials on alert across the state.

They are concerned with sulfur dioxide emissions from Kilauea.

The lack of tradewinds means the vog, or volcanic emission, is just hovering over the islands.

Those in the Kau district on the Big Island are feeling and seeing the greatest impacts.

But officials say statewide, some folks need to take precautions.

"I thought it was my glasses were not working very well," says Winston Rowlands, a Hawaii Kai Resident.

It's not your glasses, the hazy conditions mean one thing.

More sulfur dioxide lingers in the air ...

"I've been feeling really tired all day and my eyes were all red I didn't know what," says Rowlands.

The SO 2 is one of the most dangerous components of vog..

"It meets with the mucus tissues with nose and throat and of course sulfur dioxide with water becomes sulfuric acid," Dr. Kalani Brady, UH School of Medicine.

Doctors say sulfuric acid causes local tissue damage leading to irritation.

It can also weaken your immune system.

Something these triathletes experience first hand...

"It makes me have a hard time working out training, I have to use my inhaler and take deep breaths a lot," explains Maggs Morris, a triathlete.

"I was coughing crazy and stopped training..and then I went to the doctor and it was really bad and she said it was just the vog," says Mariane Marr, a triathlete.

And on the Big Island where residents are directly affected by the vog, some have had to change their way of life.

"It got me sick so every time I couldn't be on the Kona side had to stay on the other side of the island," explains Jack Ku over the phone, from the Big Island.

And staying away is the best thing doctors say you can do for yourself, especially if you already have respiratory problems.

"You don't want to wait and have it become emergency. We have an increase in the emergency room visits for broncho spasm, acute asthma outbreaks," adds Brady.

Health officials warn those sensitive to vog to remain inside air conditioned rooms when possible, drink plenty of fluids, and keep your medicine or inhalers nearby.

The vog is expected to begin clearing tomorrow.
