Maui has options for getting goods off and on the island

By Jai Cunningham

Many people across the state are left wondering what’s next, after 85 % of Hawaii's air cargo service has evaporated. One neighbor island appears to be in better shape than others.

The Hawaii Superferry was met with protest this past summer when it made its first trip to the Valley Isle. Now Maui may be better off than other Islands because of the inter-island ferry.

“I think that's true because we have the ability to get cargo to Maui off and on through the Superferry," said Maui County Mayor Charmaine Tavares.

Tavares sees the Superferry as a help, but not a cure all.

“I don't know if the Superferry is enough. Because they make one trip and I don't know how many flight of cargo," said Tavares.

Farmers, growers, and suppliers are now searching for alternatives. Another ocean option may provide more help.

"We think we'll see nominally a little increase in it. But again from a volume standpoint what goes by air really is the high value very time sensitive type of things," said Glenn Hong, the Hawaiian Tug and Barge President.

One common misconception is that perishable items, fruits and vegetables, that's not true. Even right now on this barge those things are loaded into these air conditioned containers, destined for Kahului.

"We have refrigerated capacity. We have a lot of refrigerated containers. We can deliver those, what we can't deliver is the timeliness for very time sensitive types of things,” said Hong.

The main concern for neighbor island residents is keeping a steady flow of food between the islands. Aloha cargo's collapse has Mayor Tavares calling for sustainability.

"We've also got to look at food sustainability, and this has kind of been on the back burner because renewable energy has kind of been on the front burner lately,” said Tavares. “We need to pay a lot more attention to our food independence."

But for now all the islands remain dependent on each other to get through any hardships that might arise out of the Aloha cargo shutdown.
