More Voggy conditions linger over islands

By Tannya Joaquin

As far as the eye could see, Vog covered our islands and, the winds haven't provided much of a break.

It was another hazy day in Hilo, where volcanic emissions linger, forcing some residents to look for cover. A spike in sulfur dioxide levels shut down Volcanoes National Park for 2 days. The park reopened this afternoon, but that doesn't mean the vog is gone.

“This is like the worst its been so far,” said Wendy Ashley, a Makiki Resident.

It was so thick today on Oahu's Windward Side, you couldn't make out Chinaman's Hat. And, it was the same story from Punchbowl.. to the West Side.

“It's been really, really voggy. You can hardly see any skies at all,” said Ashley.

Wendy Ashley saw how bad things were driving from Makiki to Makakilo. Her family spends a lot of time on their lanai, usually taking in the view, but not today.

“You get a pretty good view. You can see the ships and planes come in, but at this rate, you can't at all,” said Ashley.

But, as bad as things look and feel on Oahu, the Department of Health has not seen a significant spike in sulfur dioxide levels.

This is how the DOH tracks air quality, by actually pumping in particles through this plastic tubing so they can track exactly how much sulfur dioxide is in the atmosphere.

“We have 5 stations on the Big Island and 6 or so on Oahu,” said Lisa Young from the Department of Health.

On top of the Punchbowl Health Building, the samples go from the rooftop, to a room down one floor. The measurements on a day when visibility is so poor aren't that impressive, ranging from 1.1 to 1.5 parts per billion. Closer to the source on the Big Island, levels of exposure to the colorless gas, have been far higher. SO2 levels early today in Mountain View and Hilo were 2-hundred to 5-hundred times higher, but not enough to warrant evacuations.

Sulfur dioxide levels are considered 'extremely dangerous' when they hit 1-hundred parts per million.
