Farrington's Dream Team wins National award

By Jai Cunningham

Farrington High School's "Dream Team" hit the jackpot. The group of eight students won a national award for getting its environmental message out on a global scale.

The students in the challenge were supposed to "think big". And Farrington's Dream Team did just that, going global...

"Since Farrington is a place where there's a lot of different cultures. It's like a melting pot," said Robert Delim, one of the members.

"Well you know since Hawaii is a really diverse and we have so many different kinds of ethnicities around here," said Genevieve Cagaoan, another member.

There was nothing tongue tied about this idea...A lot of different ethnicities, speaking many different languages about clean, renewable energy.

"We had Ilacano, Tagalog, Hawaiian, Samoan, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, French, Korean," said Farrington teacher Bebi Davis.

And how would these inspired teenagers get their multi-language message out...

"Since most of the teenagers are into MySpace and YouTube...So we tried spreading our word," said Delim.

It worked. The Dream Team won the grand prize in the Lexus Environmental Challenge. Their reward, something any teenager can appreciate.

“Here is Lexus giving away a lot of money. And you know kids they like money. And I told them the best part if you win it's going to be yours," said Davis.

"When I heard that we were one of the teams who won one of the grand prize I didn't believe it at first because they announced it the day after April fools," said Princess Rosit, another Dream Team member.

No joke...75-thousand dollars in grants and scholarships. Once it's all divided up each students get more than six thousand dollars.

"Most of my money I'm going into college tuition for my fist year because I'm going to U.H.," said Cagaoan.

It appears they know how to take care of more than just the environment.
