City Council Train Wreck

By Tammy Mori

It's being called a city council train wreck.

When asked tonight to vote on which technology is best for Oahu's proposed fixed guideway system, the council could not make a decision.

It could be the single most important decision this city council was asked to make.. how to spend millions of taxpayer dollars for this mass transit project.

Dozens took the stand either for or against the proposed steel on steel rail option, an option that a panel of experts had recommended to the city council.

The council listened to more than six hours of testimony, but when it was their turn to take the stand.

Only eight members were present, Barbara Marshall had a family emergency to attend to.

So the result, vote after vote, political gridlock.

"For all you who are here this evening and anyone who is watching if you want to know what a train wreck in Honolulu looks like, look no further than here," says Charles Djou, Honolulu City Council.

Four of the city council members tried every political move possible to put a halt to this steel on steel rail transit proposal.

But in the end all eight were left at a standstill...approving no options at all.

They voted to reconsider all three technology options at the next council meeting, postponing what some members say will be the inevitable.

"I'm calling on the mayor to make that decision because we have failed to select a technology," says Nestor Garcia, Honolulu City Council.

A decision the mayor already decided to take into his own hands, after witnessing what he calls incredible and unbelievable politics.

"I have directed my transportation services to begin inserting steel on steel as technology into the draft EIS and preliminary engineering as of tomorrow," says Honolulu Mayor Mifu Hannemann.

The Mayor says we don't have any time to waste because the transit funding depends on the fact that construction begins next year.

The council will meet a week from today, on the 23rd.
