Hawaii student filmmakers show off their work

By Kirk Matthews

Student filmmakers get their chance to show off in the 5th Annual Olelo Youth Exchange Video Competition. Last year, there were 300 entries - this year, there are 450

You may be looking at the work of the next Stephen Spielberg - these are just some of the entries in this year's Olelo Youth Exchange video competition. Students compete in different age groups - and different categories of interest.

"We want to find out from them what issue are they concerned about, what do they want to share about their community, what's the story they want to tell. So we really focus on things like news segment, PSA, music video but they really come up with what the topic is," said Kealii Lopez, from Olelo Community T.V.

One group of 6th graders from Aikahi Elementary did a public service announcement of recycling and the environment. Katherine Seth said picking the topic wasn't hard.

"Well, not really, so first we got a storyboard and we sort of brainstormed a little and then we wrote out our ideas and then we started filming," said Katherine Seth, an Aikahi Elementary 6th grader.

These videos will be shown on Olelo for the next couple of weeks - and then there will be a big awards ceremony.

"For them, it's like their own Oscars or Emmys activity. And they're just excited. It's great to be in a room and hear them just scream and yell with excitement when their school or they win. It's just fantastic," said Lopez.

Making videos is second nature for this generation Teachers say students who may not excel in other areas, often do with the videos.

"There's a lot of kids who don't necessarily - they're not maybe the strongest readers or the writers or the math people, but with their technology skills and the high level of interest, the products that they produced were outstanding," said Aikahi Elementary teacher March Nakayama.
