Meet "The Watercolor Cat"

By Kirk Matthews

Artist Peggy Chun continues her battle against A.L.S. Lou Gehrig's Disease. But she is still painting and you'll be able to find her work in a new children's book called "the Watercolor Cat".

The book is actually the story of Peggy Chun's artistic career, told through the eyes of her long time companion Sara the cat.

"And you know what better way than, for children, to let the cat tell what life is like with Peggy Chun the artist," said the author, Shelly Mecum.

Mecum gave Sara the cat her voice. Sara shared Peggy's artistic endeavors - but also her courageous battle against ALS.

"The adults that read it will cry. But the children when they read it are thrilled that Peggy will never give up and that invincible spirit that keeps painting no matter what the odds are," said Mecum.

Over time she lost the use of her right hand but immediately began painting with her left hand. When that ability was gone, she painted with a brush held in her mouth. When THAT was gone, she communicated and painted with movement of her eyes. When beauty is gone, Mecum says, artists take over.

"They create it themselves. And Peggy has created a masterpiece of beauty with her life with ALS. And I think it's going to shatter a lot of people's conception of what we can and cannot do, what we should be doing."

The Watercolor Cat will be on bookstore shelves early next week.

"And Peggy had such a blast this summer doing the design of it and she insisted that Sara's paw prints be placed through the paint and across the page and it was wonderful to watch her really paint this book," said Mecum.

Shelly Mecum is one of the dozens of friends who call themselves Peg's Legs. They are with her day and night to make sure she has whatever she needs.

"We say we're going to take care of Peggy. But in reality, Peggy is laying there taking care of us, one heart at a time."
