New City Nissan Revamps Kalihi for Website

By Tannya Joaquin

The New City Nissan held its grand opening today at its new North King Street location.

It's a 45 million dollar investment that could pay off by revitalizing a neighborhood that's had its share of troubles.

New City Nissan is the new kid on the block, a welcome neighbor.

"The facility here before was over 50 years old so the building that was here before was kind of rundown" says New City Nissan President John Uekawa.

The 2 lots on North King Street, just off the freeway, were once home to a bustling Kalihi shopping Center, but when the businesses closed, things went downhill fast.

Homeless moved in, there were arrests for copper theft, evidence of fire, illegal activity, and unsightly graffiti.

Here's what neighbors had to say about the property in 2006: "It is an eyesore when you look it." and "Ugly."

That was then.

This is now.

New City Nissan purchased the property for 21 million dollars in 2005, seeking to expand from its longtime Ala Moana location.

"We were busting at the seams" says Uekawa. "We had about a 1.7 acre lot. Now we have 6 acres lot."

Room for 600 cars in stock, and a high tech 47 thousand square foot facility.

With the added space, Uekawa hopes to add 15 more employees.

"We're looking forward to employing more people in the very near future. Right now, we're just looking forward to opening up and settling down" says Uekawa.

Customers and employees are expected to pump money into surrounding businesses, and give a boost to an area that could really use it

The first day of business began with 6 car sales before lunch.

Other dealerships are also changing spaces.

Pflueger Honda relocated recently onto Beretania Street and Acura moved into its old digs.
