"It's crazy over here. It's real nice. Everybody get together. Like one big ohana family," said Conrad Felicida, a Kalihi resident.

50,000 are expected to watch the State's largest fireworks show, although regulars notice a difference.

"Last year we came, it was more crowded than this. I guess because Hawaii Kai side is going to have one," said Felicida.

Tents are going up for the first ever Independence Day at Maunalua Bay. Donations of money and necessities like porta potties helped keep costs for the day long celebration and fireworks show to 70-thousand dollars.

"Love it. Love the idea of it. Hopefully it will be a great turnout," said Ian Rasor, a Portlock resident.

Welcome news for East Oahu residents, reluctant to brave the crowds in town.

"We don't even go to Ala Moana because it's just too crowded," said a Hawaii Kai resident.

"Can't stand the crowds and traffic. Too much commotion going on there," said Elaine Lerner, a Kahala resident.

Hawaii Kai's Costco saw its share of crowds, stocking up for the 4th.

"You got to have meat, got to have umbrella, towels, you got to have chairs," said James Ough, another Hawaii Kai resident.

James Ough will celebrate with family on the Windward side.

"I want to avoid the huge masses, but there's still plenty on Lanikai, Kailua beach, they're still pretty crowded," said Ough.

But nowhere near the crowds expected at Ala Moana. Police will be patrolling the park for anyone drinking alcohol or setting off fireworks. Campers can stay overnight, but their cars must be out by 10 p.m.
