Love is big business in Hawaii, but is the wedding industry taking over our beaches, leaving others high and dry? Starting next month, there will be enforcement of weddings at state beaches to keep couples from hogging the sand.

It's a scene repeated around the State daily, newlyweds posing for pictures on State beaches.

Photographer Richard Shaw helps couples capture their dream day the right way. He has an annual permit with the State Film Office and shares the beach with swimmers.

"We try to find a spot that's not in the way of most people," said Wedding Photographer Richard Shaw.

Other wedding vendors have made waves by not following the rules, and overstepping boundaries by asking public beachgoers to move for private weddings, prompting action by the State.

"The message I need to make clear is as of August 1st, we will be requiring anyone performing commercial activities on the beaches to have a permit," said Morris Atta, from the State Land Department.

The State's Land Department invited wedding vendors to a meeting, to explain the rules. Next month, 'right of way entry' permits for all weddings and photo shoots on state beaches will be enforced.

"Realizing there needs to be some balance between preserving the resources and being able to have some commercial activity on our beaches," said State Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert.

"I think it's too bad if the State feels it has to come in and regulate something that's so beneficial to the State. It creates such a good image. People on the beaches love watching weddings," said Rosemary Hill, from My Hawaii Wedding.

"There is such a beautiful thing about walking onto the beach. Usually it's very small and they want to do something very romantic in a quiet place," said Karen Russ, from Weddings of Hawaii.

Those in the business of love hope balance can be found to preserve Hawaii's reputation for beautiful destination weddings.
