Aloha to Aloha Block Party

By Tammy Mori

The "Aloha for Aloha" block party is just winding down.

Many businesses and people in the community stepped up to raise money for the Aloha employees in times of need.

The outpouring tonight was overwhelming.

Employees say it was a time of healing and support with the community by their side.

If there was a time we needed to lean on one another- aloha employees say it is now.

And that's exactly what happened downtown tonight.

They shared their success stories...

"I've continued going back to school which helped me get a job i'm looking forward to starting in the next couple of weeks," says Jean Ota, a Former Aloha Customer Service Agent.

And they cried together with those in pain.

Offering support both emotionally and financially to those who are facing medical emergencies...

"Theres not words to describe it because it's so overwhelming," says Aaron Chun, a Former Aloha Customer Service Agent.

Overwhelming because the donations tonight are helping to save people's lives...

like 25 year old Aaron Chun who was born with hemophilia...

He has an upcoming surgery at a price tag unimaginable for anyone without insurance.

"Close to $400,000 so this fundraiser means a lot to me and to others that have medical issues also," says Chun.

It's donations from 5 dollars to 10-thousand dollars...from strangers to former competitors.

"All of us here at United area sends our best wishes and our fondest aloha to each and everyone of you during these most difficult times," says Mariellen Jones, Lokahi Project Coordinator.

Tonight was a testiment that the aloha spirit remains alive within the company.

"They're my family, we're all one. Aloha is all one," says Delrie Anderson, Aloha Cargo.

And the Aloha is alive in all the people who these employees have touched.

"It's unbelivable, its Hawaii it's the way people are here," says Don Murphy, owner of Murphy's Bar and Grill.

Lokahi will be counting up all the donations and have that total by tomorrow.

A local foundation will match the donations collected up to $50,000, a goal Lokahi believes it reached tonight.

And it's not too late to give, you can visit lokahi through khon-2-dot-com.
