Island Dairy Owners Asking for Minimum Price Increase

By Brianne Randle

Rising prices have taken their toll on many island companies. Especially the dairy industry - where now only two remain.

There's pain at the pump and just about everywhere. From Big Box stores to your local markets. Businesses are trying to keep up.

Hawaii's two remaining dairies are struggling to make it happen.

"Farmers need to keep up with their cost it's been a very volitile market and when they keep up with cost they also need to keep up with their prices," says Jeff Peterson, Dairy Feed Provider.

Easier said then done. Clover Leaf Dairy and Island Dairy on the Big Island are having a hard time keeping up..and they're asking for help.

"The prices of feed and fuel have gone higer than anyone in the livestock business could have predicted." says Monique Venderstroom, Former Pacific Dairy Manager.

"As the cost to producing milk goes up the price to the farmer must also rise or the farmer will be unable to sustain his business."

Their solution is to increase the minimum price paid to milk producers by about 52-cents per gallon. While that increase doesn't set store prices...local milk at your grocery would likely jump.

"I still feel there is a tremendous demand for the product so whatever it takes we need to keep it going," says Ed Boteilho, Clover Leaf Dairy.

Dairy owners say they've been unable to pass rising costs onto the consumer because their prices are regulated. And, they fear without a price hike mainland dairies will flood the market.

"This price index is needed to help the last two remaining dairies in hawaii to survive," says Vanderstroom.

The Board of Agriculture approved the price increase for public hearing on the Big Island. After reviewing all input - the issue will go back to the board for final approval. That decision isn't expected for another few months.
