A visitor from Arizona says her backpack was stolen from her rental car, and she's pleading for the return of her photos and videotape. She wants to use the seven degrees of separation to get it back.

Kari Vanderpool says it happened on Wednesday and that the theft could have happened either in the Aloha Stadium parking lot or the Fort Derussy parking lot in Waikiki.

She says her backpack had a laptop, camcorder, camera and underwater camera in it.

"The video camera has the videotape of my daughters birth on it that I cannot replace. And that alone, I don't care if I get the laptop back they can have it. I want the documents, I want the photos and I want the video of my daughter," said Kari Vanderpool.

If you have any information that might help detectives, call the Honolulu Police.

Time & time again, we hear of items being stolen from tourists to our island paradise of thieves. When will they ever learn? When in Hawaii, the people here are trying to make a living, whether by legal means such as working legitimately or by working at a craft of stealing from others, tourists or locals, no difference. Of the later, it is to feed their habit for as a late diva said, "for the cheap stuff, crack is whack."

ALL rental cars have a giant notice in the trunk telling you not to leave valuables in the trunk. She didn't listen and learned the hard way.

When U come to the Getto for a vacation, why on earth would U leave all Ur valuables in the trunk of your car! Sorry I found out the hard way when I first moved to Mauai. I also put my stuff in the trunk of my rental car,Some local theives were sitting around watching for this kind of action. When I went to go get some lunch they hit the car. they work in teams,a lookout&the perps. I don't think this will happen. What was she doing carrying all that stuff around in her backpack and losing it without noticing? Sometime, we are all victims of crime but being proactive does make the losses far less painful.

No backups of your daughters birth? Bumbai you learn... now All I can say is good luck in Hawaii getting anything back. Maybe try telling the state to stop overspending and get us our tax returns on time then maybe there wouldn't be as many thieves.

If the lady wasn't around when her backpack got stolen, who's to say the thief didn't close the trunk? Maybe THAT'S why she didn't know it was missing - because she hadn't opened the trunk to get it out until later? Thieves often 'spot' their targets, so putting things in the trunk doesn't mean it won't get stolen. I'm sure if they're smart enough to get into a car, they're smart enough to close a trunk, buying them more time to get away. Of course It's common sense not to leave things out in the open, but when thieves get into these new rental cars, they can easily pop the trunk with the flick of a lever. Best to keep your valuables with you instead. Also, all the more reason for people to back their important pictures & videos up & get them off the camera - you never know when it might get lost in one form or another (corrupt disc, stolen, etc).

Must've been IN the car and not in the trunk because she doesn't know where it was stolen from. Items left in the car can be seen by people. If it was in the trunk, she would've seen the trunk open. Just like when Christmas comes around, people are reminded not to leave items in their cars where people can see it. Common sense. Don't leave things out where others can see it. Thieves know what cars are rentals. Easy target.
