A former Waikiki pimp who went on the run instead of facing trial was sentenced in a Honolulu courtroom.

Joseph Vaimili will spend decades behind bars.

Vaimili was dressed in an orange jumpsuit from Halawa Correctional Facility.

A jury trial took place while Vaimili was on the run.

In that case his victim testified to the regular beatings she took from the much larger Vaimili.

"If you look physically at his size he is all of 6'4" 280 (pounds) at the time in the pre sentence report. The victim in this case was barely five feet, barely over a hundred pounds,” said Adrian Dhakwha, deputy prosecutor.

The kidnapping and promotion of prostitution took place over a two week period and the venture proved to be quite profitable for Vaimili.

"Each night, as the victim testified she was giving the defendant over a thousand, anywhere from a thousand to two thousand dollars a night. This is a very lucrative business from the defendant's perspective,” said Dhakwha.

Judge Randall Lee oversaw the trial, and was struck by the violence Vaimili displayed when the woman tried to leave the profession.

"You would use force, violence to make her conform,” said Lee.

Vaimili spent more than a year on the run and was caught in Texas.

His attorney told the court he feared for his life and that is why he ran.

Vaimili's attorney also said his client will appeal the verdict and that's the reason the defendant didn't say anything during the sentencing.

Vaimili was given a 40 year prison term, with a mandatory minimum of more than ten years...

"Victim of these types of crime are prostitutes, and they should feel comfortable coming forward that they will be protected, that there will be justice for them,” said Dhakwha.

@AntiClause - Of course I do not support the beatings of a woman especially from a man! But you know, I don't support prostitution either. It’s really a shame though because it's not like Vaimili held a gun to her head, like you said she CHOSE her profession & with that specific profession she knew her damn self it came with many "rules" she knew she had to abide by. Nothing in life is easy but I'm sure if she couldn't handle her job, getting a REAL job wouldn't have been so hard! I don't know Joseph Vaimili at all, I have never met the man, but I know of him & like @TEAMJB mentioned; the broad chose to stay with him & continuously returned to his side so WHY SHOULD HE BE PUNISHED FOR DOING HIS JOB!? The media is just corrupting the public’s mind because due to the fact that he was a “pimp”, which changes nothing, from who he really is. Bad enough the media messes up everyone’s opinions & thoughts on people but it’s sick because it’s like the media belittles who THEY THINK IS WRONG IN ANY CASE. I go out to Waikiki almost EVERY SINGLE NIGHT & I see what these girls do for a few bills, yeah it’s degrading to some women but you know what at least they handle what they have to do to get it, why couldn’t she? Next time, be smart right? If you know you can’t handle what life throws at you, maybe you shouldn’t be doing what you’re doing. I bet she’s still out there prostituting…SHAME. I have nothing against prostitutes but she’s probably just out there again to get another guy in trouble & make HIM suffer * like how she’s making Vaimili & the only reason why I'm speaking out about this one is obvious: A MAN IS ABOUT TO SPEND 40 YEARS OF HIS LIFE because an idiotic GIRL couldn't get it right? She was just trying to make money & so was he, I'm damn sure she wasn't complaining when she got wtf she wanted but as soon as that all stopped she's a victim & the system is going to show her something far more than "PITY"?! Something is seriously wrong with the world! #FreeVAIMILI

It's funny how Honolulu's retarded ass media is so into making Mr.Vaimili look like a monster when those who actually know him know that he is far from it. It's also funny how Honolulu's media left out the fact that the girl was obsessed with him. More then once did he let her walk away and she refused. They also left out that the girl wanted to be in the care of Vaimili's at the time girlfriend mothers after she knew Vaimili's girlfriends mother kept incontact with Vaimili. If she was so scared for her life why would she want to keep contact with anyone that affiliated with him? Im not saying its right for a man to beat a woman but tell all sides of the story. The media also didnt announce how gang members came to Vaimili's house and threatened him with guns to leave the Island or they were going to take his life being the reason he left. See theres so much to this story that you people dont know. Until you do let he who is without sin cast the first stone. So shes the victim in all this yet when she was getting her new Gucci bags, and her red bottoms, and her nails and hair did she didnt have a problem with the life. To you idiotic morons that want Vaimili to spend 40 years behind bars think again he will not cause he doesnt deserve to. You got people out there raping and killing babies letting them go with 8 or 9 years and you give this man 40 years for something that the girl was down for from the start of things. What part of Honolulus retarded ass system is that.

Fact #1: Every Prostitutes in Waikiki was recruited by the pimps through coercion, threat and force at some point. Fact #2: Every Prostitutes in Waikiki has to surrender ALL their money to their pimp. No woman chooses with her free will to do this. Pimps don't allow woman to work solo. Solo working girls are rare. Negative attitude of the community and law enforcement towards prostitutes pegging them with sub-human status, and Hip Hop rappers glorifying "Pimping" do not help the community to properly identify a vicious modern day sex slavery that is a growing problem in our community. A typical pimp makes $2000 a day off the girls that work for them. This issue is national and international, and pimps don't discriminate who they coerce and recruit; Any young girls who have problems at home and are frequent runaways are all at risk.

I get the fact that she has been hurt & beaten but that makes no excuse for the main cause; SHES A PROSTITUTE! Talk about lack of self-respect & class! Regardless of the situation, I'm pretty sure getting a real JOB wouldv'e helped avoid all of this. I say #FREEVaimili, right or wrong - whatever I may be that's just my real word on this.

Oh yes, they do exist in Waikiki for sure, as well as Honolulu, Pearl City, etc. You'll be surprised by the number. Some of these girls need & want "protection, management" and still many others are forced or become corrupted, usually with the supply of drugs and easy money. Very easy for the unforced willing ones to be corrupted. I've noticed the same with dancers at karaoke and hostess bars: the money is too easy.
