UPDATE: The city medical examiner has identified the man as Aaron Torres, 37, of Waianae.

-------------------

A Waianae man died Monday after being restrained by Honolulu police officers.

Police say it happened around 4:30 a.m. Monday in Waianae when they responded to a 911 call for assistance.

When they arrived, they say a 37 year-old man appeared to be mentally unstable and possibly under the influence of drugs.

Police say they restrained the man so he would not hurt himself or others and that's when the man became unresponsive.

The man was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Jessica so sorry for your loss. It's hard to imagine how attempting to restrain someone can lead to their death? I suggest you consult an attorney. Michael Green is awesome. If there was no improprieties, HPD can be vindicated but if there were...

yeah ok I understand the police are trained to restrain folks when needed but he was beaten while in restraints (both arms and legs were handcuffed). On top of that three cops were on him for half an hour before they tried to put him in the squad car by that time he had no pulse and unresponsive. lets say one officer weigh about 200lbs thats over 600lbs of pressure with his face in the dirt. they killed him now they are trying to cover it up. He died at the house not at the hospital. God help us get justice!!

Were there any witensses involved? What kind of restraint would kill a man outside of a strangle hold? I know HPD is just doing their jobs, and I'm sure they felt threatened themselves, but sheesh, go easy on a brudah. Prayers sent for friends and familly.

@Jessica Torres, I am sorry for your family's loss. Whether he was on drugs or just freaking out over life, and whether or not the police were right or wrong, your family is suffering and I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry that people are so quick to judge. And if it turns out he was on drugs, what family hasn't suffered any pain because of drugs? Just ignore the fools, not worth getting upset over.
