A fire at a duplex on Palekaiko Street left six people homeless.

Fire investigators say the fire was caused by the malfunction of electrical power strip in the den where computers were kept.

Six members of an extended family are homeless after fire destroyed their Pearl City duplex.

Officials say the fire started in the right hand side of the duplex.

The fire started at the home on Palekaiko Street about 12:15 Monday.

Firefighters say at least half of the home was already in flames when they arrived.

They spent about 20 minutes extinguishing the blaze, and stopped it from spreading to nearby homes.

"It looks like a complete loss, we still don't know the cause of the fire," said Capt. Terry Seelig of the Honolulu Fire Department. "Investigators at the scene and firefighters were quickly to use compress their foam system to control the fire."

The family's pet dog made it out safely, but their cat died in the fire.

Damage is estimated at $350,000.

The family is staying with other family members while they make other living arrangements.
