A newlywed couple from Japan went for a motorcycle ride today.

The woman is now dead and her husband is hospitalized in critical condition after their motorcycle crashed.

According to the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, the couple is here on their honeymoon.

Emergency crews were called to Kaaawa near the Crouching Lion just after noon today.

"What happened is they decided to go for a motorcycle ride then unfortunately the accident occurred," said Jessica Lani Rich, Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii.

Police say the couple had been riding a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle together.

They were heading towards Laie on Kamehameha Highway.

The husband was driving the motorcycle, lost control, and hit a guardrail.

He and his wife were both thrown.

Paramedics took the couple to The Queen's Medical Center -- both in critical condition.

The 27 year old woman died from her injuries, and her 27 year old husband continues to fight for his life.

"When people come to Hawaii they come to celebrate as they did and unfortunately it ended in a tragedy," said Jessica Lani Rich.

VASH has offered assistance to the newlywed's family.

Jessica Lani Rich says the couple is traveling with the woman's mother, aunt, brother and cousins.

They're visiting from Fukuoka, Japan.

"They were towards the end of their trip," said Jessica Lani Rich.

Police say neither the man nor woman was wearing a helmet.

And they do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

"It breaks our heart to hear, you know your wedding and honeymoon is supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life, and it breaks our heart to hear that this is a honeymoon that ended in tragedy, and a very sad situation," said Jessica Lani Rich.

The City Medical Examiner has not released the woman's name yet.

This is the tenth traffic fatality on Oahu this year.

What kind of license does one need to rent a motorcycle? What are the responsibilities of the Agency renting these bikes? What are the requirements needed to rent and operate the bike? What kind of training is available regarding the operation of the bike? Just asking the questions and looking for answers...Let us show Aloha to this newly married Widower and family. May he remember the good times too and not just the bad here in Hawaii.

MiniMeeh47..you can NOT hate these types of motorcycles...I don't know if you are specifying only Harleys, to me..its the operator who runs this bike and maneuvers it...same like a gun, its just a piece of quality crafted metal that serves a purpose of sports or protection, its the operator who uses it for legal or ILLEGAL purposes. Maybe the husband owned a sportbike back in Japan which is way different from a harley but maybe he wanted to try a different bike when he rented this out. By the way, with the vid I seen...that area was windy..so windy that the news cameraman could not hold his camera steady...and those pro's gear is very heavy! so you could imagine. Maybe a surge of high gusts DID in fact throw his bike off and he crashed into the guardrail...

It looks to me like the tire on that motorcycle is completely bald! If it's a rental, it should have been changed.

I think ALL operators who visit our islands and rent out anything from mopeds to motorcycles SHOULD BE REQUIRED and MANDATORY to wear helmets. They do NOT know our streets and roads well enough to risk any bodily injury and unfortunately, death. Don't say nah..I won't need it..I am careful...cuz you will never know :(
