A pilot project on Maui could help lower electricity costs. It's called a "smart grid.

We get our electric bill every month, but we never really know how that electricity is being used in our homes and businesses. Through a Department of Energy grant, there may be a solution to that in the future. Jay Griffin heads up the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute and is starting a pilot project with volunteer homeowners in Kihei.

"So the first piece of that is what is known as a smart meter and that's what you have here, you can take it apart," Griffin explains. "This is a conventional electricity meter but it has different types of memory chips in there and communications."

Those communications take place between the meter and the different appliances in the home or business that use electricity. You can check on a daily basis where energy might be wasted.

"A personal, secure web site where you have the ability to look at that information and the idea here is you receive your bill at the end of the month and you don't how much electricity you used or how much it cost you until you get the bill," said Griffin.

You still have to use electricity - but knowing where it's being used can offer the homeowner some alternatives.

"Studies show that you still need to make choices about how you may want to save money but that shows reductions in energy use between two and ten percent," said Griffin.

With the increasing cost of energy, more homeowners are turning to photovoltaic cells to power their own homes. But sometimes, they must rely on the power company grid. This is going to require some adaptations of the technology - but Griffin says those are coming.

"The industry as a whole is evolving on how to manage that new type of challenge for the grid and so there's lots of newer technologies going in to support those types of innovations," said Griffin.

Griffin says Maui and Hawaiian Electric are eager to find out the results of the pilot project.

"They're absolutely interested in how to evaluate these new technologies that will support where the state's going and where people are going with wanting to save energy and wanting to install new types of energy in their home," said Griffin.

The utility industry is one of the last industries to go digital. If you look at other industries, from health to telecom, adding digital intelligence affords much greater efficiency and new capabilities we didn't dream of five years ago. Isn't it time for our energy systems to move into the modern era? Knowledge is power---and that's doubly true when it comes to electricity.

Come on. Don't talk down to us. Its so obvious that these meters provide all the benefits to the utility company. They can get rid of their meter readers, turn off electricity remotely, locate power outages. They off this little nugget of being able to see your usage to try to get the customer buy in. How many people don't know how to cut down their electric useage? This approach touting how much more control we will have is total BS. I don't like being treated like a dummy.

SMART METER INFORMATION IS WORTHLESS FOR CUSTOMERS A professor gave a lecture in California and he explained how the concept of smart meter information, saving energy and reducing utility bills, is FALSE in practice. The information from a smart meter is NOT real time and it is NOT formatted (organized) for a customer to improve current or future energy usage. The utility companies through false advertising make people ASSUME that when they get the Smart Meter information it automatically assists them, but it does NOT. The professor equated smart meter information to a gas gauge and a speedometer that tell you how much gas you had YESTERDAY and how fast you were going YESTERDAY, worthless information for today or planning for tomorrow. The smart meter does NOT isolate the individual usage amount of electrical devices for the customer and it takes time to sign up on their utility site and sign in to see information that doesn’t assist you. Anything that brings attention to energy usage can remind the customer to reduce their energy usage, but the smart meter, itself, is useless. And smart meters at Millions and Billions of dollars are a financial disaster for the people, a windfall for the utility companies. I really don't care about my electricity use because the more I try to cut back the less I save because of factors beyond my control: fuel adjustment costs. The cost of burning oil is passed on to me! This smart grid technology favors the power companies more than the consumer. They don't have to send out a meter reader and they have your electricity use data on their servers. Your personal info could be sold to other companies for sales and marketing their electrical products! Personally, all I want is to have the power company provide uninterrupted service 24/7 365 days a year. Is that too much to ask for?
