President Bush spending the night in Hawaii

By Jai Cunningham

President Bush will spend Monday night on Oahu.

He arrived at Hickam Air Force base shortly before 5:30pm Monday.

He was greeted by the Governor and Mayor, just to name a few.

The seal of the President of the United States leaves little doubt as to who is on this Boeing 747.

Air Force 1 touched down amid heavy security at Hickam Air Force Base.

Not long after landing the President made his way down the steps to a greeting line about a dozen deep.

Even for high ranking Hawaii officials it was a treat to meet the 43rd President of the United States. "I wish I could sneak up there and be like a little kid in the candy store,” Lieutenant Governor James Aiona said minutes after Air Force 1 touched down. “And see what's like because I heard there were all kinds of goodies up there."

The president and Mrs. Bush had a special meeting with a woman who has volunteered thousands of hours helping Hawaii's sick.

Eloise Monsarrat is a volunteer with the Human Animal Bond Program at Tripler Hospital. She had gifts for the President and first lady and other family members. "Silk leis with the dark pink crochet lei, round one for Mrs. Bush and a little one for her scottie. So, both dogs and both people got leis," Monsarrat said.

The devoted volunteer also said she was impressed after meeting the commander in chief. "It was very rewarding. It made me think it was good. And I'm glad that he reaches down to the people. You know people like me."

After the meet and greet it was into the caravan and off to dinner.

The President dined with Governor Lingle and Admiral William Fallon, the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command.

"I guess tonight what the Governor will talk about is how we can better our relationships with Vietnam, and Korea, and China, and all of our Asian brothers and sisters,” Aiona said. “And that's where we need to go. And as you know the Governor is not afraid to insert what needs to be inserted for the best of this state."

Bush is expected to have breakfast with Hickam soldiers Tuesday.

Afterwards he’ll have a meeting at Camp Smith in Aiea, and he’s scheduled to leave the Islands at 9:30am.
