Neighborhood Property Crimes

By Brianne Randle

Thieves have been targeting a section of East Honolulu.

"It's no surprise to see actually what goes on," says a McCully resident.

Neighborhoods between Moiliili and Kapahulu have been the hardest hit. A man, who asked that we not identify him, has fallen victim to theft.

"I've had items stolen out of the back of my truck twice, two different occasions yes," he says.

Both within the past week.

Initial police statistics reveal about seven cases of burglary, fourteen thefts and four unauthorized entries into motor vehicle's in the last ten days. All within a two mile stretch.

"I really thought those numbers were a little low, for this area. It's kind of scary but there's a lot of that kind of stuff happening here," he says.

Last month the number of thefts reached 43.

"Ripping you off, trying to rip you off trying to get into your house,' says Sue Benyish, McCully resident.

"Obviously I'm concerned," says Honolulu City Councilman, Charles Djou. He says some of those property crimes were in his district.

"Property crime unfortunately is a direct correlation between how well the economy is doing and property crimes - its not unusual at all to see when the economy slows down property crimes increase," says Djou.

He adds, these crimes are happening across the state and all across the nation.

"But unfortunately Hawaii sometimes we have a greater problem with property crime, and property crime is one of opportunity," he says.

In 2006, more than 5,400 burglaries were reported on Oahu. Central and Leeward areas reported the most.

"The public should be a little bit more cautious a little bit more on guard," says Djou. "In terms of police I think they're very well aware in the increase in criminal activity, certainly I think you'll see the police becoming more vigilant regarding criminal activity in the coming months."

Police say to cut down on property crime, neighborhood watch groups are especially effective.
