Three Teens Arrested for Auto Theft

By Ron Mizutani

Three teenagers were arrested for auto theft Tuesday and escaped serious injury after the car they were in flipped near Kahe power plant. Police say the incident started when two cars slammed into in a guardrail in Nanakuli. Witnesses told police two vehicles were slamming into each other as they sped down Farrington Highway.

"These guys was flying, they was flying flying top speed," said witness Kimo Pitt.

Officers spotted one of the cars and estimated it was travelling well over 100 miles per hour. Witnesses say the driver lost control of the silver Volkswagen when he tried to avoid several trucks parked alongside the road.

"All I heard was watch out -- watch out and I look like that and the car just came flying right over the railroad tracks -- right over the fence and flip right over," said Leroy Soares.

"Just like watching T.V just pass by and dust and the car in the air -- just like on T.V.," said Harry Thomas.

"They ended up skiing and flip the car and him and these other two kids end up running away after that," said Pitts.

The car came to rest on its roof near Kahe Power plant. Witnesses chased the three teens and were able to catch one of them, a 14-year-old Kapolei High School student.

"The other juveniles in the car escaped -- one is injured being scene by HFD now -- and the man hunt is starting for the missing juveniles," said
Lt. Danny Ford of the Honolulu Police Department as he reported the incident.

"What's the driver's name" an officer asked the teen. "I don't know that's my friends friend," he answered.

The teen told police he did not know the driver but says the passenger is another Kapolei High School student who's been arrested before.

"Car thief," he said.

"The plate is in the car I think," said an unidentified officer.

"This is a stolen car because he even said it too," said Pitts.

Police confirmed the Volkswagen was stolen from the Waipahu area Monday.

"It's just real sickening because you know all these innocent people and they doing stupid stuff like that," said Pitts.

The two other teens were found later. All three were arrested for auto theft. Police had no information on the second car.

"They lucky -- the kids lucky he's still alive-- I mean we thought they were dead," said Harry Thomas. "I never expect anybody to get out."

"I just was happy that none of them dead," said Soares.
