Waikiki nei goes on hiatus

85 employees furloughed

By Marisa Yamane

After several delays, a Waikiki theatrical production opened its doors two months ago at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

But employees of "Waikiki nei" were told today that tonight would be their last show, at least for awhile.

$22M was invested in the show and high-tech showroom for "Waikiki nei."

The Managing Partner says they made their decision to put the show on hiatus after getting mixed reviews, combined with low ticket sales.

"Waikiki nei" was touted as a thrilling theatrical production that takes audience members on a journey through the history of Waikiki through songs, chants and dances.

But the curtains have come down -- at least for the time being.

"We opened the show two months ago and we have had feed back and from the industry as well as the community, and we're taking a hiatus to revamp and rethink about what we're doing with the show," said Roy Tokujo, Managing Partner.

The "Waikiki nei" showroom, on the 4th floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, can accommodate 750 people.

Tokujo says ticket sales were good for the the opening month of August.

But September was a different story, with an average of only 250 to 300 audience members at each performance.

Adult tickets ranged from $49 to $99.

"If you're going to revamp the show, rechange it, you have a lot of input from the marketplace. It's the right timing if you're going to do something do it between now and the end of the year," said Tokujo.

Tokujo is still unsure if they plan to revamp "Waikiki nei" or come up with a completely new show.

"The marketplace has changed demographics so we just you have to adapt to what you're doing. We are working as a group to formulate what the final product will be," said Tokujo.

That final product will also determine which employees get re-hired.

Approximately 85 employees are now on furlough.

Adjacent Level 4 Nightclub, which is also owned by the same people, will not be affected.

And in fact Tokujo says Level 4 has been a success since opening this summer.

Anyone who's purchased tickets for an upcoming performance can get a refund through the "Waikiki nei" box office.
