A Special Event for Miracle Children

By Marisa Yamane

A special event at the Honolulu Zoo Today was held in honor of some very special children.

Ryder Lum may seem like any other kid.

"I like to razor with my cousins, biking with cousins. And we like to do water balloons, water guns."

He's a cub scout...has pet lizards.

But Ryder's life has been anything but normal. In fact, it's a miracle he's still alive.

His father, David Lum says, "When we diagnosed Ryder, it was within weeks of a point where he wouldn't have made it if we waited any longer."

A year and a half ago, Ryder was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

"Ryder has been courageous throughout the whole thing," says Mr. Lum.

"He was of course telling the doctors what they need to do."

After six months of chemotherapy and radiation...Ryder is a cancer survivor.

So are many of these kids who are gathered here at this special event at the Honolulu Zoo.

This "jungle fun" event was put on by the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation, an organization that helped the Lums -- emotionally and financially -- though their trying time.

"Sometimes you don't think about the mounting bills from the medical costs so this was a big blessing for us to have this fund," says Ryder's mom, Richelle.

This event also helped to kick off national childhood cancer awareness month...and served as a fundraiser, so that other kids and their families can be helped in the same way the Lums were helped.
