Search Continues for Missing Coast Guard Crew Member

By Brianne Randle

The search continues to find the fourth crew member of a Coast Guard helicopter that crashed Thursday night.

Three hundred members of the Coast Guard and fifty from the Honolulu Fire Department are helping with today's search ...covering an area roughly five times the size of Oahu.

Today, Coast Guard search crews found debris from the downed helicopter today, but still no sign of the missing crew member.

The helicopter went down in the water about five miles from Honolulu Airport.

The bodies of the three other crew members have been recovered.

They're identified as co-pilot Andrew Wischmeier, rescue swimmer David Skimin, and flight mechanic Joshua Nichols.

The Coast Guard has not released the identity of the missing crew member. They do say he has a wife and kids.

"We have recovered from the search area parts of the helicopter, panels, and they're being brought ashore to sand island by our crews and will be transferred to a hangar at Hickam where we're assembling the wreckage of the aircraft," said Lt. John Titchen, U.S. Coast Guard.

"It's very hard on our crew members to be picking up pieces of our own helicopter, and it's a very trying time."

The coast guard has brought in personnel from Northern California and Alaska to help with the search.

Officials say they will continue searching through the night and as long as they feel there's a reasonable chance for the missing crew member's survival.
