Police Investigate Aiea Murder Suicide

By Ron Mizutani

For the second time in less than a week police are investigating a murder-suicide. The latest case happened Thursday morning in Aiea, after a man and woman were found dead in a convenience store. Area residents heard the sounds of gunshots just after nine o'clock -- about a half hour later the bodies were discovered. The mini-mart is located on busy Kamehameha Highway about a mile from Pearlridge Center.

Honolulu Police were called to Bobo's Mini Mart after a customer discovered the first body.

"At about 9-44 this morning a customer walks into the mini-mart -- discovers an adult male lying on the floor in a pool of blood with a firearm laying next to him," said Major David Kajihiro of the Honolulu Police Department.

Police and emergency personnel arrived shortly after.

"They then find a female, an adult female behind the corner in a pool of blood," said Major Kajihiro. "We did recover a firearm in the case."

Sources say the weapon was a revolver and both victims suffered single gun shot wounds.

"We do have witnesses that heard gunshots earlier like about half an hour earlier but they didn't call the police," said Major Kajihiro.

Friends say the dead woman is the shop's owner Judy Shimamoto -- customers called her Mama Judy.

"Some people buy one thing no pay no quarter -- she say okay next time you pay," said friend Kisun Kim.

The man believed to be in his 60's was known as Dennis.

"Dennis was just like one helper -- help out Judy always be there with her then he would cook lunch or dinner," said regular customer Gabriel Edrado. "Always just being there for Judy."

The woman's husband arrived at the store about an hour after the bodies were discovered. Stanley Shimamoto was escorted by police into the store. He later left with the family's two dogs. Customers say Mama Judy and Dennis were so close -- they were often mistaken as husband and wife.

"Husband is Denny -- wife is Judy," said landlord Wayne Choe. "Everyday I saw those two couple but they real nice couple you know."

Police would not comment if a suicide note was left behind.

"At this time we're still investigating the motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting," said Major Kajihiro. "If it is a domestic violence situation -- again if it is -- it's very unfortunate."

"I pray for the kids -- she got two kids a boy and a girl -- one is in college in the states and I hope they take it well I know going be hard on them," said Edrado.

Customers say Mama Judy was at the store more than 12 hours a day -- seven days a week
